Those girls with their amazing shirt from aero postale and I’ll be nice I’ll say wow cute shirt and shit like that but then I look beside me and I’ll see what is basically the same shirt and then I’ll go cute shirt where did you get it and you know what that….
I’ve made a huge effort up untill this point not to shop at these places just because of this. Advertising has become ridiculously embedded in western traditions and our culture. It is all around us. So unavoidable, to the extent that most children, even at a young age, are broadcasting media advertisment on themselves with what they are wearing, which they will be judged and be selected to be positioned in a particular prejudice category on later where they will be, pardon the pun, ‘branded’ in, usaully permanantly. This clothing is usually expensive, and not always affordable to all economical classes.
Personally, I think boycotting these stores and particular types of marketing schemes is going to be socially ineffective. Our society has already embraced these types of marketing through fashion, and I think if we are careful, as consumers, we can alter them into a more positive experience through popularity based sales. I think this is a wise decision, because certain elements in stores such as Bench or LuluLemon are actually profitable from because of their fantastic quality. Example A) being the coffee stains, which did not come quite so easily out of my GARAGE shorts as they did my jacket.
Clothing should be about style, not brand. So, I’ve made a personal choice that if we are going to embrace brand name clothing, we should pick articles of clothing that impress us because of the cut, fit, and design, not because of how the word or logo looks. Purchasing Aero or Ambercrombie clothing is suitable, preferably if the logo is minimal, and almost barley visible on the item. Going out and buying extreamly overpriced TNA hoodies, Aero, AE, or any other type of clothing that just has the brand name puked across it, still makes me a little uncomfterble, and personally I don’t find it that attractive.
I like shopping at a variety of stores. I think it’s important to expand your style and flavour for clothes to things a little more creative. It opens up more possibilities.
Honestly that and everybody doesn’t need to look the same.
